Abstract

Traffic congestion is a major challenge faced by many smart cities today. One potential solution to this problem
is dynamic traffic signal control, which involves optimizing traffic signal timing in real-time based on changing
traffic conditions [1]. In this paper, we use operations research methods to develop optimization models and
algorithms for dynamic traffic signal control in smart cities. We use real-world data to test our models and
evaluate their effectiveness in reducing traffic congestion, travel times, and emissions. Our results demonstrate
the potential benefits of dynamic traffic signal control for smart cities and highlight the importance of using
operations research to develop effective transportation solutions. We conclude by discussing the implications of
our research for transportation planning in smart cities and recommending areas for future research.
